Chapter 20

Trent headed for the back exit, hoping he could find Erin before she left. He imagined her calling a ride, possibly in tears. He hoped she wasn’t crying. He’d hate the thought that he’d made her cry. Maybe she’d slap him and call him names. He could take it. He would…

Trent stopped just yards away from the exit when he saw a flash of gold. He turned and saw Erin laughing with a guy. He didn’t realize he was gripping his hand into a fist until he felt his nails biting into his palm. All worry left him like a swift breeze and in its place was a cauldron of anger. Not towards her, but him. This man. This man who dared to smile and touch the shoulder of his woman.

He’d never felt the teeth of jealousy engulf him like that before. Even at Dorothy’s wedding he’d felt pain, not fury. And the thought of Erin in a wedding dress exchanging vows with someone else became too much to bare. Oh hell no. She was his and no man was going to take his place until he was ready to let her go.

He stormed up to the pair, took Erin’s hand and said to the man, “Excuse me,” amazed he could manage the words.

But his grip wasn’t solid enough and Erin managed to pull her hand free. “You’re excused,” she said in a cold tone. She folded her arms so there was no chance for him to reach for her again. “It seems that it’s a night of meeting old acquaintances. Martin meet my ex-boyfriend Trent.”

Martin grinned and held out his hand. “Did that motorcycle ride terrify you too?”

Trent clenched his teeth and ignored the outstretched hand. She hadn’t taken him on her motorcycle yet. “She’s trying to be funny.”

Martin frowned. “I don’t get the joke.”

“Me neither,” Trent said taking Erin’s arm before saying in a low voice, “Either come with me or I will cause a scene that will get me arrested if I have to.”

Erin took the hint and waved at Martin. “It was nice seeing you again.”

He nodded. “Likewise.”

Trent led her into a dark hall inside the club that was illuminated by blue neon lights along the trim. A large sign directing visitors to the restrooms hung at the end. They weren’t alone, another couple was making out; another man paced mumbling something to himself, but at least it wasn’t as crowded as the main room. Trent released her and said, “Okay, now listen—”

Erin pinned him with a hostile glare. “No, you listen. I’m through pretending that you can’t hurt me. That it’s okay that you never compliment how I look or what I do for you. I’m tired pretending that it’s okay that I’m always scheduling our time together.” She hit her forehead. “And stupid me I was really excited about tonight because you made the suggestion. I even got a new dress. I thought tonight would be special. And at first it was nice, but then you changed and hardly looked at me once Xavier showed up.
